This topic continues to be important to members of the SIG. At Auburn, we implemented ePortfolios (from ROI/PEMS) this semester in our first 3 professional years with emphasis in the entry class. Our efforts focus on the portfolio supporting our longitudinal experiential course that starts in the first year. Students use the portfolio for reflective exercises that focus on several topics. Instructors can also elect to use the ePortfolio in their courses as desired.
What have others done?

Here at ULM we are only using it for our service learning and IPPE/APPE starting with the first year group this year. We did not know if we would get buy in from the didatic training, would love to hear some feedback if other schools are having luck with the E-portfolios.

Jeffery, we at U Washington want to use our portfolios across the curriculum, but like you are concerned about buy-in. I have been having our students do e-portfolios for 10 years and have been the only one outside of our external PharmD program to use. We are going to try LiveText because of the teaching applications. I am interested in others' experiences with this program and portfolios, in general.
ReplyDeleteHere at U of Iowa we have just signed contract with e*Value for their portfolio system. Plan to start with P1 students for service learning and some didactic writings. Would love to hear how others are setting up their portfolios!
ReplyDeleteAt South Dakota State we recently switched from an in-house system to E*Value (for the P1 and P2 class, P3's and P4's still use the in-house system). We try to use the E-portfolios across the entire curriculum and coordinate it with some of our assessment activities.

One of the discussions we have had when talking about implementing ePortfolios in the Pharmacy curriculum is the process of reviewing them. Who reviews them? How often? How are they assessed? Any insights into what works well is much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteDan,
ReplyDeleteIs E*value already set up and running for you? We seem to have gotten bogged down in determining the descriptions and names for the roles to just get it set up to start.
Are you utilizing the Px/Dx function, and if so, exactly what types of activities are you tracking? We would like to try to track non-procedure related activities such as volunteering at the free medical clinic, etc. with that tool.
M Starry,
ReplyDeleteE*Value is up and running. Roles have been assigned and students and preceptors have been loaded. My suggestion would be to give people as much access as possible. Once everything is loaded, you will be able to go in there as the administrator and make any necessary changes.
We are not currently using PxDx function. We decided to implement the various functions one at a time and in the order of importance. PxDx didn't make our initial list.
Feel free to give me a call if you have any other questions.
Thanks for sharing, Dan! We are trying to start out utilizing several different program components from the start- evaluations, scheduling, Px/Dx portfolio.
ReplyDeleteWhich component are you focusing on first? What hurdles have you had to overcome in the implementation?
At Lipscomb we are also using e*value for our e-portfolios. They are just now up and running and since this is our first class, we are starting them off slowly by primarily reflecting on their IPPE experiences. We are also obviously building in demographic info as well.
ReplyDeleteWe've also rolled out our first round of mid-point formative evaluations for the class on each course and for the student pharmacists self-evaluation. Things are going very good so far....e*value's tech support has been super.
If you have questions, please email me at thomas.campbell@lipscomb.edu
We're currently evaluating EMS' and RXportfolio's systems. We may evaluate Live Text's also. For those who use one of these products, any lessons learned you would like to share? We're planning on using the product we select with all 4 years of students.
ReplyDeleteAt Shenandoah, we've used RxPortfolios for 2 years now in the intro to pharmacy course where students complete the 'profile' aspects of it. Then our service learning course uses the blog/post function to reflect on experiences. We are working on trying to incorporate its use into IPPE.
ReplyDeleteAt University of the Incarnate Word we use Rxportfolios throughout the curriculum and APPEs.
